The boys and girls of Room 5 had a wonderful first full week! Each day got better and better. We are working on building our stamina as third graders. We enjoyed math lessons about place value this week. We also spent time learning how to treat books like gold. We talked about how there are 26 letters in the English alphabet. Those 26 letters are arranged to make words. Those words make sentences. Those sentences make paragraphs. Those paragraphs make pages. Those pages make chapters. Those chapters make books. It is impossible not to treat a book like gold when you truly think about how they came to be. Each and every book has a new adventure!
The boys and girls have started their place value unit in math. We began by reviewing patterns and skip counting. Now we are building numbers with place value blocks. We learned that our digits are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. All numbers are made up of those digits. We also talked about the value of the digit is determined by the place it is in. Lastly, we started talking about standard, expanded and word form of words.
For example: 235 = standard form
200+ 30+ 5 = expanded form
Two hundred thirty five =word form
Room 5 would like to congratulate Gabby for being this week’s Star Student! Gabby was picked to be our first Star Student because she is kind, honest and respectful. Gabby is also incredibly hardworking and she follows all of the directions. Well done Gabby! Room 5 is very proud of you and your hard work.
Thursday, September 22 Brewster School is pledging respect as a part of our Core Values studies. Please wear orange on Thursday when we pledge! I am going to challenge my third graders to use what we have been learning about respect later this week when we write a Room 5 respect pledge.
Please do not forgot to do the “What’s In A Name” homework. It is due on Wednesday, September 21, 2016.
