We have a very busy week ahead of us! Tuesday and Thursday are normal school days, Wednesday is our first field trip to Bushy Hill and Friday is our Fire Safety Day. If you are coming as a chaperone and wish to carpool or to follow the bus, please meet at Korn by 9:05. Some parents have expressed interest in carpooling. Students will need to dress for the weather since we will be outside all day. I’d highly suggest dressing in layers since we are in and out of the woods throughout the day. Comfortable shoes with decent treads are also encouraged since we will be walking around all day. Students will also need a snack, lunch and drink brought from home. Please pack snacks, lunches and drinks in bags labeled with your student’s name to avoid confusion come lunch time. Friday is our third Fire Safety Day at Korn. This year, the third grades will enjoy fire safety talks done by my lieutenant and myself. A firefighter from Middlefield will also be joining us for the fire talks, along with Sparky! After the class hears the fire safety talk, they will get to tour Durham’s Rescue. Lastly, I am happy to announce that Trooper Weber and K9 Taz are coming back for a demonstration! Fourth graders will get to tour the rescue and enjoy the Trooper Weber and K9 Taz demonstration. Thank you to the Durham and Middlefield Fire Departments, along with Trooper Weber and K9 Taz for helping make this day educational and memorable for our students. Another thank you goes out to my lieutenant from Company 8 in Wallingford and to Lt. Shaffer from Wallingford Fire for coming out and helping with Korn’s Safety Day.
Please consider helping your child take part in “The Great Core Ethical Value Challenge” that I sent home last week. If students create a poster (8.5” x 11”) that abstractly represents and reflects the Core Ethical Values, they will receive two homework passes from me! The Core Ethical Value Challenge posters are due to me by December 5.
Students are also asked to participate in the Fire Safety Poster contest that I am running. I have gotten very few posters back so to increase interest, I am offering one homework pass for each submission. The fire safety posters are due to my by Wednesday, October 15.
Room 2 would like to congratulate Mike for being Star Student! Mike goes out of his way to assist his classmates. He is kind, respectful and patient. Mike truly is a wonderful friend and classmate. Congratulations Mike, Room 2 is proud of you!
Students will receive another spelling packet this week. As with the last one, I will review the words along with the assignments with the students prior to sending it home. Please have your students complete the packet and hand it in on Monday along with their weekly reading question. We are really working on using words from the question in our answer and supporting our thoughts with evidence from the text, then wrapping up our thoughts. For example..
Tell three ways that Native Americans used buffalo.
The Native Americans used buffalo in many ways. One way was…… A second way was…. A third way was… The Native Americans used every part of the buffalo.
Formula to answer questions:
Use words from the question in your answer. “Framing your question.” Answer the question with evidence from the text. Wrap it up by rephrasing the question.
Warmly,
Miss Pantalena
