Last Friday I sent home a writing activity to be completed at home. Students have to disguise their turkey and then write a story about the turkey avoiding the farmer. The stories are due back to school by Friday, November 20. Students are allowed to type their stories if they wish to instead of handwriting them. Students could also share their stories with my via Google Docs and I will be more than happy to print them off at work. I hope you enjoy this assignment! I can’t wait to read the stories and see the turkeys!
If you have replied about conferences, please do so this week. I am very willing to work with you if the date/time that you were given does not work with your schedule. When you receive your student’s report card, please note that a grade of a 3 is the goal for the end of the year. A grade of a 2 means your student is working towards mastery of the goal. In order to receive a grade of a 3, students have to show consistency, and independence with the skill over a period of time.
Room 2 would like to congratulate Lilly on being this week’s Star Student! Lilly has been working extra hard in school the last few weeks. Her confidence is growing and she is starting to take more academic risks which is wonderful. Congratulations Lilly! Keep working hard and growing into the wonderful student that you are! Room 2 is very proud of you.
We are going to continue working on learning our multiplication strategies this week in addition to working on deciphering multiplication word problems. Students are learning to identify if the word problem is talking about equal groups. Then they are using their strategies to solve the word problem. We have discussed circles and stars, arrays, skip counting and repeated addition. We have also practiced visualizing and drawing the word problem. Students are learning to identify what is important and to paraphrase the question when solving a problem. Our next strategy will be skip counting on a number line to solve multiplication. I expect that this will be an easy strategy for the class to learn due to the fact that they were very comfortable adding on a numberline in our last unit.
Students will be asked to paraphrase or put the story they are reading in their own words for this week’s reading response question. When paraphrasing, students should give a brief overview of the story. Since it is a brief overview, they should not use any dialogue from the story. Students should focus on mentioning the title, setting, characters, problem and solution in their paraphrasing. An example is available on our notes from class portion of our webpage.
Warmly,
Miss P. and Stryker!
