I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing Christmas break. I enjoyed being able to see my entire family and to be able to spend time with Stryker. Thank you for all of the concern about my back prior to the break. I am feeling much better and am almost back to myself. Knowing that my students and my students’ families care so much about my well being makes me very happy. Thank you!
Thank you so very much for the unbelievable turnout for the Lego Premier! The students of Room 2 and myself were blown away by the amount of family members and teachers that came to the premier. I hope all of you enjoyed the popcorn, presentations and the movies! I finally sorted out some of the issues with my weebly account. The Lego Movies are officially posted and labeled correctly. I am truly sorry for all of the technical issues! I hope if students wanted to share their movies during the holidays, they were able to access them via their Google Doc account.
This week we are going to continue talking about metaphors (a comparison of two objects) and similes (comparing two items using “like” or “as”). Prior to vacation, we used the song from How The Grinch Stole Christmas to learn the difference between the two types of figurative langauge. For example, “You’re a monster.” and “Your brain is full of spiders.” are metaphors and “You’re as cuddly as a cactus.” is a simile. We are going to start talking about idioms this week. Idioms are similar to proverbs in the sense that they are short sayings that when taken literally mean something completely different from the figurative meaning. For example, “a penny for your thoughts,” “it’s raining cats and dogs,” “barking up the wrong tree.”
We are also going to continue talking about character traits, and character motives in literacy. Students have learned how to describe characters physically. Students have also been working on identifying the character traits. A character trait is a personality trait. Students are also learning to identify why character traits change throughout a story. Students are also learning how to identify the evidence for why a character is acting a certain way. This week’s reader’s response question will be about character traits.
The weather is (finally!) getting cold and acting like it should in winter. Students are still going outside for recess so please make sure they are dressed for the weather. Sometimes our playground is very windy so it feels extra cold!
Thank you,
Miss Pantalena and Stryker
