We are starting a new unit in math this week. We are starting to learn about multiplication. The goal of this unit is to understand why we multiply. Students will learn why 3x5=15 rather than just memorizing the algorithm. Students will also learn vocabulary such as groups, equal, product and factor. Below are some of the methods you may see your child using throughout this unit.
We are also working on paraphrasing, recounting and summarizing texts in literacy. Students know that paraphrasing means to “put it in your own words.” They also know that when they paraphrase, they do not tell everything that they remember. They only tell the important parts. Below is an example of a paraphrase answer based on Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type.
Paraphrase, recount or retell the story. (Tell just enough to get the reader’s attention- don’t give away the whole story!)
Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type is about a farmer who has a real problem. His cows know how to type and make demands for ridiculous things. Luckily for the farmer, the duck comes up with a solution that everyone is happy with. In the very end, another problem may happen with the typewriter.
We have been working on boosting our vocabulary. Last week we learned the meaning of unquestionable and tremendously. Please ask your student what the words mean and ask them to use it in a sentence. There will be a portion of our webpage dedicated to our new vocabulary words. Try to encourage your child to use the words in their daily language.
Room 2 would like to congratulate Gianna again for being Star Student! Gianna has been pushing herself to participate in class throughout the day and to follow directions the first time they are given. Well done Gianna! Room 2 is proud of you!
Many boys and girls had a rough week last week when it came to following directions. Students were very chatty and often needed four or five reminders to follow directions. Due to the fact that so many students struggled with directions, we had a conversation about what we all can do to improve. Keep working hard and working towards your goals boys and girls! I know you can pull it back together. The remaining students will earn Star Student soon...I can feel it!
Room 2 would also like to congratulate Joey for winning first place in Middlefield’s Fire Safety Poster contest! We are all so proud of you!
This Friday is our Halloween parade and party. Students will be allowed to dress into their costumes just prior to the parade. The parade will be at 1:30. Our party will follow immediately after around 2:00. The kids will then go off to chorus for 2:30. Feel free to visit me at Company 8 on Saturday between 5 and 8 pm for our Haunted Bay. We will have candy and some snacks along with some interactive Halloween themed attractions! My department is at 2 Kondracki Ln in Wallingford.
Have a happy and safe Halloween!
