The boys and girls of Room 2 have been doing very well with the multiplication strategies that we have been learning. We have also been learning about the properties of multiplication. We know that the commutative property allows us to “flip flop” the factors and still get the same product. We also know the zero property states that anything times zero is zero. Lastly, we know that anything times one is the other number is called the Identity property. Next week we will begin learning the distributive property. The distributive property allows students to break apart the factors to make them more manageable. For example, 5x14 could be broken down to (5x10)+(5x4). We will also learn the associative property, which requires students to do what is inside of the parenthesis first.
If you have not returned your conference paper, please do so. I tried to honor the preferred times you marked off after Open House. If a time or date needs to be changed, please let me know. I will do what I can to work with you. When it comes time to reviewing your student’s report card, please remember that 3 is the goal for the end of the year. If a student receives a 3 on his/her report card, it means that the student has mastered that skill. If a student receives a 2 on his/her report card, it means that the student is working towards mastery and that student is able to perform the skill independently but still makes errors or needs some assistance. If a student receives a 1, the student still needs a lot of assistance and/or manipulatives to complete the skill.
Room 2 would like to congratulate Kaylee on being this week’s Star Student! Kaylee has been working extra hard with our multiplication unit. She really is grasping the concepts and is showing her knowledge on a daily basis in our math classes. Congratulations Kaylee, Room 2 is proud of you! Keep working hard!
Please visit http://www.perfectpotluck.com and use Pantalena as the coordinator and Pumpkin as the password to sign up to bring in a goody or two for Friday’s Halloween celebration after the parade. Thank you to our Room moms for coordinating this!
