The denominator tells you how many groups (circles) there are. The numerator tells you how many groups you need to look at. The whole number tells you how many to divide out into the groups. Make sure you know if you need to count the fraction or how many are left! If the question is asking how many are left, you need to count the remaining groups. Look at the Sparky problem. He ate 2/6 of his cookies so he ate 4 cookies. He still has 4/6 of his cookies or 8 cookies left to eat. 2/6+4/6=1 whole, or in this case 12 cookies!
